Magazine Research

The masthead 'Billboard'comes from the Billboard chart, which is the most listened to song or album in the United states, Billboard is a weekly magazine that shows the music in the billboard chart.
The music genre for 'Billboard' is a chart music, it changes each week depending on what people listen to. The target audience is very wide and it is for all people that like Chart music, so this would appeal to men and women of all ages. You can see that this magazine is for this target audience because the main image is of a successful teen Pop artist Miley Cyrus this would attract both genders as they will both like her music and women will aspire to be like her and men may be attracted to her.

Miley Cyrus is really popular in America and in the UK and most people that listen to chart music will like her music. In the main image she is looking directly at the camera therefore engaging with the audience and her fans making them want to look inside the magazine and read on. The main image relates to the genre of music as she is often in the billboard charts and is really popular in America and is often number 1. The image is framed in the colour purple this suggests royalty and creates an element of mystery which is intriguing for the audience and makes them want to read on. Miley Cyrus appeals to a wide audience teenage girls will aspire to be like her, looking at her overall image and style. She is wearing a black top and gloves, which is quite classic and mature which anchors the kicker 'The Queen Of Tween Grown Up' because its talking about how she is growing up and its a mature grown up style. Her make up is neutral but striking with the pale lips and the dark eye makeup, this appeals to the target audience because her make up looks good and they would like to have their make up in a similar way and follow her look.

There is a theme running through the straplines, all of them are music related and mentioning popular chart music artists such as Justin Bieber and 3OH!3. This would attract the target audience because all of these artists would have been popular at the time and people that like chart music would. The language is quite informal and it uses persuasive language to encourage people to buy the magazine and read on. An example of a persuasive technique that they have used is 'What's really behind the DOJ's itunes inquiry' this is a rhetorical question, which makes the reader want to find out the answer. Also the use of the word 'Really' suggest that inside the magazine will reveal the truth about DOJ's itunes inquiry and also that the reader may not have been shown the truth before.

'Q' is a monthly music magazine in the UK, the genre of music that this magazine focus' on is very wide and includes genres such as rock and pop, therefore it appeals to a wider audience. The masthead 'Q' could suggest 'Cue the music' and 'Q' is short for the word 'Cue'. This makes it easy to see on a magazine stand and stand out. It is also not limiting the genre of music and allows the magazine to have a wider range of music therefore a bigger target audience. The magazine has used three main colours; red white and black these are all classic and sophisticated colours suggesting that the magazine could be aimed at an older, more sophisticated audience.

The main image is a cropped long shot of Lady Gaga she is often in the charts in the UK, she is really unique and is known for her quirky style. She is looking directly at the camera which involves the target audience and makes them connect with her, making them want to read on. It relates to the very wide genre of music because Lady Gaga is a pop artist. Her costume is quite revealing and looks very striking, she has a black glove on her hand which is covering her chest and she is wearing tight black trousers which have spikes going down her leg. The glove is shaped like a gun this makes her look powerful and dangerous which anchors the kicker 'Lady Gaga Has Risen' because power gives you a higher status and in the music industry it will mean you are near the top of the charts. Her trousers are tight showing off her figure and appealing to the target audience as women may aspire to have a figure like her and men will be attracted to her. The spikes suggest again that she is quite fierce and dangerous, which could mean that other pop artists will have to watch out for her as she has 'Risen'. Her costume is quite revealing and striking showing that she is different to other artists and could suggest that she is really confident. The lighting is mainly on her chest and face, this draws the audiences attention to this part of her body and makes them see it when they first look at the magazine cover. This area could be highlighted to show off her bold makeup and big hair also to make it clear that she is in control by showing the chest area. The background for the main image is a grey and white gradient, this has connotations of being stylish and quite futuristic, showing that Lady Gaga is quite futuristic and could reveal what the future of pop music looks like.

This is a double page spread in the 'Billboard' magazine, it is inside the magazine with Miley Cyrus on the front cover. The main image is of Miley Cyrus sitting on a wooden floor with a concrete wall behind her, it is quite simple and rustic making the reader focus on Miley and the text. The text across the middle of the page says 'Girl, you'll be a woman soon' the word 'Girl' is in bright pink and word 'Woman' is in black this could show the change from a girl to a woman. Her outfit is black so this could show that she has become a woman this means that the text anchors the image. Miley is positioned in between the words 'Girl' and 'Woman' this shows that she is in between the two showing that she is not a girl but nearly a woman.

The main image has Miley Cyrus who is a successful teen pop star. She is sitting in the corner of a room leaning up against the wall, looking quite relaxed this shows that she is comfortable where she is in the music industry and she is right when she wants to be. The lighting is on Miley Cyrus this suggests that the spotlight is on her at the moment and she is the person that everyone is listening to with her new album 'Can't be tamed'.

The layout is quite simple and not cramped, the main image covers the double page and the setting is quite simple so it is easy to put text on top. The main colours are black and white with a grey concrete background so this makes the hot pink and Miley stand out and bring the page to life. The page is visually attractive and has a good flow when you initially see the page you look at the main image then the eye is drawn to the main text across the middle of the page 'Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon' the text is in capitals and looks quite modern and stylish, which reflects how people see Miley.

This is a contents page from 'Q' magazine. The main colours on the page are black, white and red, these are classic colours that look good and go well with the masthead, as the colours for this are red and white. The masthead is shown twice on the contents page, on a black bar near the top of the page next to the word contents and in the box underneath the main image next to the word review. This personalises the magazine and ties in the colours together.

The magazine is split into two sections on the left handside there is the text telling you information about what is featured in the magazine and on the right handside there is a photograph of The Courteeners, an alternative rock band and underneath there is a box with text and a photo of Nick Cave who is a musician. This layout works well because you can clearly see the content of the magazine but the page is not full of text so it is visually attractive.

The main images takes up a large part of the page it shows an alternative rock band on top of a hill. They are all wearing dark colours suggesting that they are a rock band.

Preliminary Task

This is my School magazine that I created on Photoshop using the Apple Macs. Above is the front cover of my School magazine. I am not pleased with the result as it does not look professional but there are a few things i like about it. Some of the features I do not like about the magazine cover, is the main image and the colour scheme. the main image is of an Alevel student at Lordswood girls that is really pleased with his results, it anchors the strapline to the left of his head 'Alevel results getting better each year', he is wearing a red and black shirt with a blue top underneath. His clothes do not match the black and yellow colour scheme, if i did it again and had more time to do the task i would make sure the costume was a plain colour so that it goes with the colour scheme. The lighting is quite bad and has made the models face look quite shiny, the picture could of been of a better quality with better lighting. The model is quite realistic and does look like a student that goes to the school, this would appeal to the target audience of students at Lordswood Sixth form because they will be able to relate to the model and will want to read the magazine. The model looks happy and really pleased with his results and is not giving the audience direct eye contact this shows that he is really pleased with his results and is an action shot of when he first saw them. The setting was in a school hall but i have put a mask over the background and added a black and white gradient, this mask did not go very well and did not give the overall look of the magazine a very professional edge.

The mast head is 'Lordswood Sixth form' this would appeal to the target audience because its not for a specific gender or type of student its for all of the student. The colour black is gender neutral and the bold text will be appealing to a wide audience. I used an alliteration for the kicker 'Picture Perfect Prom' to grab the audiences attention with a short and quick line. All students especially the girls will want to see the prom pictures and it would appeal to the target audience because it is the fun part about being in Sixth Form and less of the educational side which gives a good balance.

This is the second part of the Preliminary Task. Above is the contents page that I also created using photoshop. The topics for the content of the magazine would appeal to students at the Sixth form because they will be interested in the success of things like the basket ball academy. i do not like the overall look of this page because it does not look professional and when i was putting a mask over the background the effect looked messy and you can still see marks on the page. The photograph looks dark and the brightness of the page is brighter than the photograph.
